How matching materials, finishes, and forms help create a more complete leather object.

Hardware as a system in leather goods is often seen as a secondary detail. In reality, it plays a far more important role. Buckles, D-rings, frames, clasps, zipper pullers, feet, and other metal elements should not feel like separate additions chosen one by one. In a well-resolved object, they belong to the same visual language. This cohesion is one of the quieter yet most important reasons why an object feels complete. This approach can also be seen in my bespoke calfskin and alligator travel bag project, where the hardware was selected as part of a coherent whole.

Why Hardware in Leather Goods Should Be Treated as a System

In a more complex piece, such as a travel bag or briefcase, hardware rarely consists of just one or two components. It may include handle attachments, strap adjusters, D-rings, snap buttons, magnetic closures, zipper pullers, bottom feet, and several types of zippers. Even when each part is good on its own, the object can lose its clarity if these elements differ in proportion, geometry, finish, or material character.

For this reason, I do not approach hardware as a set of isolated parts. In my work, I treat it as a system. The goal is not simply to find a good buckle, a strong clasp, or a polished zipper. The goal is to bring together metal elements that share the same logic of form, finish, and presence within the object.

What Creates Cohesion in Hardware

This coherence depends on more than colour alone. It includes the geometry of each part, the thickness and section of the metal, the radius of corners, the character of the surface, and the consistency of the finish. Even small differences can interrupt the visual rhythm of an object. A piece may still function perfectly well, yet it will no longer feel fully resolved.

Why Material and Finish Matter

That is also why material choice matters. In my work, I prefer stainless steel hardware, including 316L stainless steel, when the design calls for durability, visual clarity, and long-term consistency. In polished stainless steel or gold-plated finishes, such hardware allows different elements to remain more unified over time, rather than ageing in visibly different ways.

One of the persistent difficulties in leather goods is that hardware is often sourced piece by piece. A maker may find an excellent clasp, a strong D-ring, or a beautifully polished buckle, yet these parts do not always belong to the same visual family. They may differ in proportion, in the tone of the metal, in the geometry of their edges, or in the way their finish responds to wear. As a result, an object may contain individually good components and still feel visually fragmented.

From Individual Parts to a Coherent Whole

For that reason, I value hardware not only for the quality of each individual part, but for the consistency of an entire range. When different components are developed within the same design language, across multiple sizes and functions, it becomes possible to build an object with greater visual discipline. This matters especially in larger or more complex pieces, where every metal element must support the same overall character.

Most clients will never describe this in technical terms. They may not notice the section of a frame, the radius of a corner, or the exact tone of a polished finish. Yet the eye registers coherence very quickly. When hardware has been chosen as a system, the object feels calmer, clearer, and more complete. When it has been assembled from unrelated parts, that sense of resolution becomes weaker, even if the reason remains unspoken.

This is why I treat hardware as part of an object’s architecture rather than as a secondary addition. In my work, buckles, clasps, D-rings, frames, zipper pullers, feet, and other metal elements are selected with the same attention as leather, thread, or construction. What matters is not only their individual quality, but their ability to belong to one coherent whole.

In the end, cohesion in leather goods is built through many quiet decisions. Hardware is one of them. It often remains in the background, yet it plays an essential role in whether an object feels merely assembled or truly resolved.
