In leather bags, metal zippers for leather goods are not a minor detail, but one of the components you may never want to replace.
Why a Zipper Is Never Just a Minor Detail
Premium metal zippers for leather goods are easy to underestimate. When people look at a leather bag, they usually notice the leather first. Sometimes they notice the shape, the stitching, or the overall finish. Much more rarely do they think about the zipper. Yet in leather goods, a zipper is not a minor detail. It is one of the components that can quietly influence how an object performs over time, and how difficult it will be to restore if something goes wrong.
My attitude to zippers was shaped not only by making bags of my own, but also by repair and restoration work. When branded bags and clutches came to me for restoration, I approached them with the curiosity of a researcher. I wanted to see how such objects were built from the inside, how they were assembled, and which parts failed first. Very often, the zipper revealed more than expected.
Why Not Every Metal Zipper Belongs in Leather Goods
I saw how even expensive pieces could suffer from zipper failure. I also learned that replacing a zipper in leather goods is rarely a simple operation. In many cases, it requires careful disassembly, precise reassembly, and the ability to work along the original stitch lines without leaving visible signs of intervention. Done properly, it is delicate work. Done poorly, it permanently alters the object.
That is why I do not treat zippers as interchangeable closures. In leather goods, not every zipper is equally suitable. For more serious work, I prefer solutions that allow the maker to prepare the zipper properly for a specific object: cutting it to length, finishing the ends, choosing the right number of sliders, selecting the slider type, and matching the pullers to the character of the piece.
Premium Series and Real Use in My Work
From the beginning, my decision was simple: use the best zippers I can realistically find. I learned early that there are recognised leaders in this field, and that some of them offer not only standard lines, but also upgraded series intended for higher-end applications. When available, I tend to choose premium metal zippers from makers such as YKK Excella, RiRi, or Raccagni Super R.

What Makes a Better Metal Zipper for Leather Goods
Some of these higher-grade series are also valued for details such as cleaner construction, more refined finishing, and, in certain cases, more symmetrical tooth geometry. These may seem like small differences, but in leather goods small differences often shape the final impression of quality more than people realise.
Choosing Metal Zippers for Leather Goods in Real Practice
At the same time, I work under real limitations. In Ukraine, there is no full ecosystem of official distributors for premium zippers of this kind. Because of that, I do not build my work around loyalty to a single manufacturer. Instead, I follow a simpler principle: whenever possible, I choose the best premium solution available from the leading makers.
This is not about collecting well-known names for their own sake. It is about reducing the likelihood of future intervention in one of the most difficult areas to replace well. A zipper is meant to be used, of course, and no zipper is eternal. But when replacement is complex, visible, and sometimes almost surgical, I would rather begin with the best solution I can access than treat the zipper as something secondary.
In leather goods, many things can be repaired, refreshed, or adjusted over time. A zipper belongs to that category only with difficulty. That is precisely why I take it seriously from the start.
