Matte Black Python Leather Watch Strap for a Koi-Inspired Bespoke Watch

This python leather watch strap was made for a bespoke watch created by a jewellery watch studio. The design of the watch was inspired by koi carp (Jap. 錦鯉), known in Japanese as nishikigoi, and the case itself was engraved with a fine scale-like pattern.

The task was to make a strap that would continue this visual language. The leather had to relate not only to the colour of the watch, but also to the scale motif of the case. A large-scale alligator or crocodile pattern would have been too dominant and visually disconnected from the fine engraving. The project required a smaller and more rhythmic surface texture.

Python leather was a natural choice for this project because its surface is built from small, visible scales. This texture creates a subtle visual connection with the fish-scale motif of the engraved watch case, without looking like a literal imitation. The matte black finish keeps the strap restrained, while the scale pattern gives it a direct relationship to the koi-inspired design.

The strap was made with black lining leather suitable for regular contact with the wrist. Its dimensions, 115/75 mm with a 22/20 mm taper, were selected for this particular watch and case configuration. The construction is resistant to occasional moisture in normal daily use, but it is not waterproof and should be protected from soaking, swimming or prolonged exposure to water.

The result is a custom python leather watch strap where the material was chosen not only for appearance, but for its relationship to the watch itself. The small scale texture of the python leather continues the koi-inspired idea of the case and makes the strap part of the same visual concept.
