During one of Sergei Sofronov’s visits to my studio, he was amazed by the variety of exotic leather textures I showcased. We immediately decided to further explore our reptilian texture concept, and this time, python skin caught our attention. The idea of transferring the scale texture onto precious metal began to take shape, and thus, the vision of creating a watch where the serpent’s form became an integral part of the design was born.
The first stage of the project involved developing a sketch that depicted a coiled python. This drawing became the starting point. In the sketch, you can see how the snake’s body forms the watch case, with its coils extending from the case towards the center of the dial, wrapping around a cross composed of four interconnected heraldic fleurs-de-lis. The hands were to emerge from the python’s mouth, mimicking the movement of its tongue, while the tip of the snake’s tail was designed to form one of the lugs for attaching the strap.
After the initial sketch was created, the idea began to take on more detailed and refined forms. Sergei and I spent a significant amount of time discussing how to turn this concept into a functional watch that not only stuns with its aesthetic but also maintains harmony with the Patek Philippe mechanism.
The shape and texture of the python’s scales were essential elements that required special attention when transferring them onto metal. Every curve of the case and each individual scale was meticulously worked on to ensure they appeared both organic and natural. Striving to balance elegance with power, we decided to craft the case from 925 sterling silver, accented with gold highlights and patina. The hour markers on the dial were adorned with black diamonds, adding an extra layer of sophistication.
At this stage, I set to work on creating the strap that would perfectly complement this unique case. A carefully selected section of python skin was chosen to emphasize the unity of style and concept. The texture of the python leather added an additional level of tactile and visual pleasure to the watch, making it truly exclusive.
