Bespoke Straps for Clerc CXX Scuba Diamonds: Epi Leather and Python Options

A client visited my leather studio with her Clerc CXX Scuba Diamonds. The original rubber strap had torn at the attachment point and could no longer be used. While we were discussing possible options, I took a closer look at the watch itself.

This model has a distinctive feature: the dial carries a wave-like relief pattern, and the original rubber strap repeats the same flowing lines. Together they form a clear visual code that refers to water, depth and motion – the natural language of a diver’s watch. It was important for me not to lose this idea when moving away from rubber to leather.

That observation immediately suggested a direction. I proposed a new strap made from Epi leather. Its surface has a refined linear texture that echoes the geometry of the original rubber, but interprets it in a more understated, leather form. This allows the strap to visually “continue” the dial rather than compete with it, and keeps the character of the Clerc CXX Scuba Diamonds intact.

Practical aspects were no less important. Epi leather offers good resistance to moisture and everyday wear, which is especially relevant for a watch with a diving background. For the lining I used a water-resistant, hypoallergenic leather, chosen to ensure comfort in daily use and stable performance even in more demanding conditions.

The story, however, did not end with a single strap. During her visit I was working on a python strap for a joint project with jeweller Sergey Sofronov. The material caught the client’s eye: the scale pattern and subtle shading resonated with the watch case and its setting. As a result, she decided to commission a second strap in this leather.

In the end we created two very different, but equally personal solutions for the same watch: a textured Epi strap that discreetly supports the wave motif of the model, and a python strap that emphasises the jewellery side of the Clerc CXX Scuba Diamonds. Between them, the client now has a versatile set for everyday wear and for occasions when she wants the watch to become a more expressive accent.
