Customised strap for the Santos de Cartier watch

This bespoke alligator strap was made for a Santos de Cartier watch using the client’s original strap as an important construction reference. The original strap provided the internal plastic watch strap insert, which was integrated into the new alligator strap construction to preserve the correct case-end geometry.

For the Santos de Cartier, this detail matters. The strap does not simply sit between the lugs like a generic flat strap. The internal insert helps the leather part sit closely against the case and maintain the intended transition from the watch case to the strap. Without this element, a new strap could fit technically, but the visual connection with the case would be less precise.

The upper leather was cut from black alligator and selected for a scale and texture suitable for the proportions of the Santos de Cartier. With a case design as architectural as the Santos, the strap should support the watch instead of competing with it. The black colour keeps the result formal and restrained, while the alligator texture adds depth and refinement.

The new strap was made in full rembordé construction. In this type of strap, the upper leather is wrapped around the edge and folded to the underside, creating a clean closed edge rather than a visible cut edge. This construction gives the strap a seamless appearance and is especially appropriate for watches where sharp lines and refined finishing matter.

The main challenge was to rebuild the strap around the original internal insert while renewing the leather structure. The old strap served as a construction reference, while the new black alligator leather, lining, stitching, and edge construction gave the strap a renewed appearance and longer usable life.

For the lower layer, I used hypoallergenic moisture-resistant lining leather to improve comfort during daily wear. The lining helps protect the inner side of the strap from moisture from the wrist, while keeping the contact surface comfortable against the skin. The strap is splash resistant, although it should not be treated as a fully water-resistant sports strap.

The result is a restrained black alligator strap that preserves the case-end geometry of the original Santos de Cartier strap while replacing the worn leather structure with a new bespoke full rembordé construction.
