S.T. Dupont belt restoration

This S.T. Dupont belt came to the studio with a worn leather strap. The buckle and the general character of the belt were still worth preserving, but the leather part had lost the condition needed for comfortable and presentable use.

In this type of restoration, the task is not simply to attach a new strip of leather to an existing buckle. A belt has to work under constant tension, bending, and repeated fastening. If the construction is too soft, too thin, or poorly reinforced, the new leather part may quickly deform, stretch, or tear around the most loaded areas.

For this project, I selected high-quality leather in a colour and finish suitable for the original S.T. Dupont buckle. The aim was to make the replacement strap look visually natural with the hardware, rather than like a generic new part added to an old accessory.

The new leather part was made with Jaeger reinforcements inside the construction. These reinforcements help the belt retain its shape for longer and reduce the risk of stretching, deformation, and tearing in areas exposed to regular stress.

The belt was finished with hand saddle stitching, giving the new strap both structural reliability and a clean, traditional finish. As a result, the original buckle could continue to be used, while the worn leather part was replaced with a stronger and more durable bespoke construction.
